Drishyam 3: should the Hindi and Malayalam films tell different stories?

Posted by PetitionFox. A question people keep asking on elsewhere (Box office trackers, film news and fan conversation, Oct 2026), asked here in our own words and answered below.

Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3: The Conclusion opened on 2 October 2026 with the second-biggest Hindi opening of the year. Unlike the first two Hindi films, it doesn't follow the Malayalam story: Mohanlal's Drishyam 3, directed by series creator Jeethu Joseph, came out in May with a different plot.

So one franchise now has two different third chapters, and fans are split over whether that's a fresh idea or a break from what made the series work. No spoilers, please.

The two third chapters

| | Malayalam: Drishyam 3 | Hindi: Drishyam 3: The Conclusion |

|---|---|---|

| Lead | Mohanlal | Ajay Devgn |

| Director | Jeethu Joseph (series creator) | Abhishek Pathak |

| Released | 21 May 2026 | 2 October 2026 (Gandhi Jayanti) |

| Box office so far | About ₹237.7 crore worldwide, the franchise's biggest | ₹66.75 crore net in India on day 1, about ₹95 crore worldwide gross after one day (Sacnilk) |

| What's next | Producer Antony Perumbavoor has confirmed a Drishyam 4 | Titled "The Conclusion" |

Why this is different

  • The first two Hindi films (2015 and 2022) were remakes of Jeethu Joseph's Malayalam films.
  • For the third, Ajay Devgn has said: "The second film was inspired by the original, but this is a completely different script." He added that he hopes Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph like it.
  • The Malayalam film got mixed reviews: some critics called it a worthy sequel, others felt it leaned on drama over the clever plotting the series is known for.
  • The Hindi film had over ₹50 crore in advance bookings and opened second only to Dhurandhar: The Revenge among Hindi films this year.

Over to you (no spoilers in the comments, please)

1. Should a remake franchise ever split from its original? Is a new story braver, or does it lose what made Drishyam special?

2. Did watching the Malayalam film in May change whether you'd watch the Hindi one, or the other way round?

3. One side has confirmed a fourth film while the other calls itself "The Conclusion". Which ending would you rather have?

4. With more audiences watching films from every language, do straight remakes still make sense?
