About this debateThe brief, sources and what people search
Two big South Indian films open a day apart in the Dussehra holiday window: Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 on Thursday 15 October 2026 and Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali on Friday 16 October. Both release in five languages, so they compete for the same screens across India and overseas. Which will be the bigger hit? Vote and tell us why.
Opening weekend (as of 19 October, trade estimates)
| | Jailer 2 (4 days, Thu–Sun) | Ranabaali (3 days, Fri–Sun) |
|---|---|---|
| India net | about ₹200 crore | about ₹24 crore |
| Overseas gross | about ₹190 crore | about ₹8.9 crore |
| Worldwide gross | about ₹410–424 crore | about ₹37 crore |
- Jailer 2 (India net by day): ₹59.70 crore, ₹37.10 crore, ₹47.25 crore and ₹55.85 crore, according to Sacnilk. Pinkvilla calls it the biggest opening weekend for a Tamil film, ahead of Coolie's ₹371 crore.
- Ranabaali (India net by day): ₹9.25 crore, ₹7.30 crore and ₹7.50 crore, according to Sacnilk. Its Sunday was only slightly up on Saturday.
- Trackers differ by a few crore and figures will be revised. The Dussehra holiday this week will show how well each film holds.
Jailer 2
- Sequel to Jailer (2023), which grossed about ₹604.5 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk. Rajinikanth returns as "Tiger" Muthuvel Pandian.
- Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. Produced by Sun Pictures.
- Cast includes SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan and Yogi Babu. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Hrithik Roshan are reported to have cameos.
- Made in Tamil and dubbed into Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
- Reported budget estimates range from ₹250 crore to ₹450 crore.
Ranabaali
- A Telugu period action drama set in British-ruled South India during the Madras Famine of 1876–78.
- Directed by Rahul Sankrityan and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, with music by Ajay–Atul.
- Vijay Deverakonda plays the title role, Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma and Arnold Vosloo plays the villain. It is the couple's third film together and their first since their wedding in February.
- Dubbed into Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
- Reported budget: about ₹200 crore.
- Deverakonda has called much of the online fan war between the two films "manufactured".
The case for Jailer 2: Rajinikanth's pull, a record-setting opening weekend by trade estimates, and a cast full of big cameos.
The case for Ranabaali: a smaller budget means it needs less to be called a hit, it holds a base in the Telugu states, and word of mouth over the holiday week could still lift it.
Also releasing around Dussehra: Rajkummar Rao's Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam (16 October), Dhanush and Mammootty's Om, and Yami Gautam's Nayyi Navelli.
No spoilers in the comments, please. PetitionFox will add first-week collections here as they are reported.

How debates work
- Pick a side. One tap, and you can switch until it closes. Only the totals are public: your side shows only next to what you post.
- Make your case. Your argument counts for your side. To answer someone’s argument, reply under it.
- Respect++ the strongest arguments, on either side, even the one you didn’t pick: +5 rep for the writer. A reply under an argument gets a quick ++.
- Changed my mind — an argument for the other side convinced you? Tap it there: you switch sides, and its writer gets +10 rep.
- The verdict. When time’s up, the side more people picked wins (under 5 picks, there’s no result). The argument with the most Respect++ on each side is crowned the best: +15 rep.
