What happened
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has won a $1.2 billion order from Vultr, a US cloud provider, for AMD's new Helios AI rack systems. It's the first order for Helios, AMD's rack-scale answer to Nvidia. HPE announced it this week alongside a stronger outlook for its networking business. HPE's stock closed at a record $63.89 on 30 September, up 3.9% on the day and about 166% so far this year.
What's in the deal
- Each Helios rack holds 72 AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs with AMD Epyc "Venice" CPUs, liquid cooling and HPE Juniper Ethernet networking. AMD's rival product here is Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72.
- Vultr will deploy the racks in US data centres for AI model training and inference. No delivery timeline has been disclosed.
- HPE raised its networking outlook. AI networking orders for fiscal 2026 are now expected to top $3 billion (previously $2.5–3 billion), and fiscal 2027 networking revenue growth is guided to the high teens to low 20s per cent.
- HPE's CFO Marie Myers said "demand is continuing to outpace supply."
The case for "smart AI bet"
- It's AMD's first big rack-scale win, giving AI buyers a real alternative to Nvidia, which could mean more competition and lower prices.
- It shows HPE's purchase of Juniper is paying off in AI networking, with orders running well ahead of revenue.
- Smaller "neocloud" providers like Vultr are buying capacity because their customers want it now.
The case for "bubble warning"
- Orders are growing about 3.5 times faster than revenue, so HPE must still turn the backlog into sales and the supply chain is already tight.
- $1.2 billion from a single customer on a brand-new platform is a concentration and execution risk.
- After a 166% rally this year, critics ask whether AI infrastructure spending can keep growing at this pace, and who ultimately pays for it.
So, is HPE's $1.2 billion AMD Helios order a smart AI bet or a bubble warning? Pick a side and tell us why. This is a summary of reported news, not investment advice.

How debates work
- Pick a side. One tap, and you can switch until it closes. Only the totals are public: your side shows only next to what you post.
- Make your case. Your argument counts for your side. To answer someone’s argument, reply under it.
- Respect++ the strongest arguments, on either side, even the one you didn’t pick: +5 rep for the writer. A reply under an argument gets a quick ++.
- Changed my mind — an argument for the other side convinced you? Tap it there: you switch sides, and its writer gets +10 rep.
- The verdict. When time’s up, the side more people picked wins (under 5 picks, there’s no result). The argument with the most Respect++ on each side is crowned the best: +15 rep.
