What happened
In late September 2026, an independent commission found Manchester City guilty on almost all of the 115 Premier League charges brought against the club (reported as 114 of 115). The case goes back to 2009 and was referred to the commission in February 2023 after a four-year investigation.
According to Sky Sports, the commission found City had:
- arranged "sham" contracts with commercial partners that artificially inflated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million
- filed accounts that hid the club's true financial position
- breached Premier League and UEFA spending limits
- failed to co-operate with the Premier League's investigation
Where it stands now
- Punishment hasn't been decided. A separate hearing will set it. The rules allow fines, points deductions and other sporting sanctions, with no fixed scale. Relegation and taking away titles have been widely discussed as possibilities.
- City have appealed. The club says it is "disappointed and surprised" and innocent, and lodged what it called a "comprehensive" appeal on 2 October. A new three-person commission will hear it, and that decision is final.
- On the pitch: City are top of the Premier League, five wins from five, and play Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, 11 October (4:30 pm UK, 9 pm IST).
- City won three Premier League titles in the seasons the financial charges cover: 2011–12, 2013–14 and 2017–18.
The case for "relegate and strip titles"
- The scale is unprecedented: more than £900 million over nearly a decade, plus not co-operating with the investigation.
- Rival clubs may have missed titles, European places or prize money because of it.
- Other clubs have already lost points for much smaller spending breaches, so a mild penalty would look unfair and set a poor precedent.
The case for "a points deduction is enough"
- City are appealing and say they are innocent. The verdict isn't final yet.
- Titles were won on the pitch by players and staff who had nothing to do with the accounts.
- Relegating the league's best team could hurt the competition, broadcasters and fans worldwide, while a heavy points deduction and fine still punishes the club hard.
So what should happen to Manchester City: relegation and stripped titles, or a points deduction? Pick a side and tell us why.

How debates work
- Pick a side. One tap, and you can switch until it closes. Only the totals are public: your side shows only next to what you post.
- Make your case. Your argument counts for your side. To answer someone’s argument, reply under it.
- Respect++ the strongest arguments, on either side, even the one you didn’t pick: +5 rep for the writer. A reply under an argument gets a quick ++.
- Changed my mind — an argument for the other side convinced you? Tap it there: you switch sides, and its writer gets +10 rep.
- The verdict. When time’s up, the side more people picked wins (under 5 picks, there’s no result). The argument with the most Respect++ on each side is crowned the best: +15 rep.
